Shock and Awe

Not sure how else to describe the Pats losing the Superbowl.
We went to our friend's house but left about 6 because the game was starting in 15 min. They knew we were leaving early. I can't see/hear a damn thing at SB parties so Betsy and I chose to watch at home. Betsy was really into the game this year. Not sure why? Perhaps because of the teams. She actually was more interested in the game than the dum commercials (which they pump down your throat at every opportunity).
Either way we enjoyed watching together.
Cooked some sausage and meatballs in the slow cooker. Mmmmmm.... that and an ice cold Guinness were nice.

Finally finished painting the cabinets. Brought the PC downstairs and got everything set up. I think Betsy is really going to like it. She needs somewhere for her stuff. I really hope this works.

Henry/Adam sick with runny noses. Ugh. Betsy and her girlfriends slept over at the Costellos house in Rhode Island Sat. night. That left me with the boys by myself sat. night into Sunday morn. First time. no big deal. nothing i couldn't handle.

back to work for now....

"Super" weekend coming

the B-I-G game is on Sunday.
Pats are in line to win another SuperBowl
Going to friends' house for pre-game then back home for the game.
neighbor/friend and I are going to watch together at my house and wives are going to his house.
N-i-c-e....

Election day is Tuesday. BIG deal around here. Still a bit undecided about 85% sure I know who I'm voting for. I'm independent so I can choose.

Got my pay raise yesterday. Not as much as I hoped for. 3.17 percent. Inflation is 4.1 percent. Does that mean I'm losing money? Not sure. Told my boss I was pretty disappointed and discouraged and hoped for something better next year. She agreed, but it was already said-and-done so nothing to do about it but move on. Been here for 7 years and my salary has increased about 16k since then. That's around 2300 per year on average.
Well... I guess I didn't take this job for the money. The benefits are amazing. Lots of time off/low stress/free education for me/kids/spouse/no worries about takeover/re-org/etc.
That is all priceless.

Oper mgmt class last night. My team (Yi-chinese for 1) now consists of me (american) and a brazilian (guy), bulgarian (girl), mexican (girl), el salvadorean (girl). Feeling like I'm at the UN sometimes.
They way it works is each person reads a case study and answers some questions. You have 2 copies, one to the professor and one for you. You get together as a team, compare notes and come to a consensus. Each person then presents a portion to the rest of the class (very difficult for the english-challenged members on the team). The last 2 weeks I've been the only one to do the homework. Everyone else more-or-less copied what I had. What should I do? Not let them see it? That's not very "team" oriented. But that's not fair - I do all the work and they just copy. I'm going to have to say something if it happens again.

More painting this weekend; hope to finish up the cabinets. Staying overnight at a friends house in rhode island on sat. night. Long story; will have details next week.

It for now. GO PATZ!

P.S. I did a 'squares' pool at work.
Here's how it works:
One of the most common office pools, and one that requires no football knowledge, is the "box pool," in which participants are assigned numbered squares on a 10x10 grid. The 0-9 numbers across the top represent one team, and the 0-9 numbers down the side represent the other. The victor is the person who occupies the square that matches the last two digits of the game's score. So, for example, if the Patriots beat the Giants, 28-14, the square that aligns with "Patriots 8, Giants 4" is the winner. Many pools also anoint winners at the end of the first, second and third quarters.

Got the entire thing filled out. 250 bucks. 1stq=45, 2ndq=65, 3rdq=45, 4thq=95
Betsy has 2 numbers but they're good ones. We'll see what happens.
Either way I think I was able to enhance my relationship with some of my coworkers on a non-working level.

It's been a while... too long...

Wow. Last post was 1/22. That's too long....

Let's see if I can remember. It gets hard now that I'm getting older to remember back more than a week or so.

Home:
We think Adam will be going to a new preschool next year. Yeah! I think he likes the school he's at now but it is designed more for learning challenged kids. this kid is anything but learning challenged! He's really quite clever too. He woke up about 2:45 in the morning on Sunday wanting to go get a book downstairs and read it! So, we hear him get up and first Betsy puts him back in bed, then I hear him and he's 2 steps down the stairs. I catch him, shoosh him back to bed and then 5 min. later he does it again. Only this time he decides to close our door first!! By the time Betsy gets up he's one step from the bottom. She gets him back into bed and promises that *dad* will read the book tomorrow. So.... lo and behold, 6:38 he comes barelling in our room ready to go downstairs and very first thing out of his mouth is i want to read that book about cars and trucks and things that go. I start reading... he takes it away and flips through until he finds the page with all of the trains on it. He stares at that for about 15 min. and then the book is pushed aside. If I would have known that I would have let him read it !!

Henry was a little sick. Had to take him to the doc office on MLK Jr. day. He had a major ear infection and a slight bout of croup. Lucky us.... 2 kids with tendencies toward croup. Now we know the drill though so it should be easier (in a way). Adam got it really bad as a baby (before we knew what it was) and had to go to the ER a few times. Not this time !! Henry also is getting a set of chompers. About 1/2 of one top big tooth, 1/3 of another and two more up top poking through. You can tell it bothers him at times. Hate to give him so much meds but not sure what else to do....

Started class last week (part of the reason for not posting). Finance class is about 75/25 college-age students. 35 people or so stuffed in the room. Professor is from Israel and he's got a bit of a thick accent but he's pretty easy-going so it shouldn't be too difficult. Operations Management professor is a grizzled old vet. Nearing retirement. He put us in teams on the first day and wouldn't you know... I'm in a team with 3 ladies - 1 from Bulgaria, 1 from Turkey, 1 from El Salvador. First class we're supposed to present our definition of management. We're all talking about it when Turkey and Bulgaria start a war about how European management is different than American management!! Long story short, Turkey pulls me aside after class, asks me what to do and then drops the class due to a "scheduling conflict". Whew! I wasn't looking fwd to playing peacekeeper for a whole semester. So next class we get a new person... another girl... exchange student from Mexico!! This will be an interesting class.

We had one day when it snowed really heavy wet stuff and lots of trees and branches broke off due to the weight of the snow. We lost a couple of limbs from a huge pine tree I can't stand. Wish the whole thing would have fallen because it would have fell on the powerlines and the power company would have had to come and remove it. Maybe I can get them to subsidize some of the cost of removing it this spring.... So far though it's just been cold. Real cold.

Scary thing at work .... a good guy who I chat with about stuff often had a heart attack while shoveling snow. I guess he pretty much realized it and they got him to the ER in time. Just put a couple of stints in and he'll be ready to go back to work in a couple of weeks. Didn't even have to open him up. Amazing! Weird thing is he's about my dad's age and same thing happened to my dad about 3 months ago.

Let's see... what else? Ecomony is in the tank and I hope we get those tax rebates they're talking about. We could sure use the cash.
I've been refinishing (sand/seal/prime/paint) some cabinets at home for Betsy.
Patriots are in the Super Bowl! Awesome. We moved here in 2000 and since then the Pats won in 01 and 03, Red Sox in 04, and now Pats in 07. Titletown USA baby!

I'm sure other stuff has been going on. I'll add more post if I can recall... Better get to work for now and stop goofing off. I need to post some pics on this thing.

The train keeps rolling along...

The search for viable storage solutions have come to a head...
Betsy found - on craigslist - a corner cabinet that looks country/cottage and fell in love with it. Offered the guy a hundred bucks and he took it. Now it's a matter of trying to fit it into our vehicle (a Honda CR-V ). Thankfully it comes in two peices (top and bottom) so, if needed, we could make 2 trips. She's quite excited; said it reminds her of what her grandmother had.

She also found a computer armoire... finally! This one seems really nice and well made and she has done some research on the manufacturer about it and is pleased. So I don't think we'll be bringing this one back. We have to borrow her sisters big SUV on Sunday to get it. And wouldn't you know their in opposite directions (north to get the suv; southeast to get the armoire) Should be an all-day extravaganza. Now the quest is to find a flat screen monitor. Found a few on craigslist but no replies yet...

Work is picking up again now that most everyone is back across the U. Getting a few new requests for new projects and changes to existing ones.

Class starts next week with the students coming back. Taking 2 courses again - operations management and finance. Couldn't beleive the price of books, 150 bucks each!! Ha, I'm going out on ebay to snipe used ones. Hopefully I can resell them for something.

Big excitement at home today - the tumblebus comes to the house. It's basically a school bus that someone has gutted out and made a gym out of on the inside where kids can run around and bounce off the walls. It comes to the house and pulls in the driveway and the kids go nuts over it. 18 kids with moms and babies from the moms club. The fun never stops.

Friday.. whew! Made it another week exercising in the morning. I took a 2 month break so I owe myself at least 2 months to make up for it. Going to get tougher after class starts since I'll be going to be bed later but I'll just have to suck it up.

Pats football party with friends on Saturday for the first of 3 games on the Pats Superbowl 42 destiny. Good stuff....

Hopefully all goes well this weekend with all of the furniture pickups. We'll see!

Fun from home

Worked from home yesterday...
Always an interesting experience. It was actually very nice because it allowed me to sleep in until 6ish, work out, shower and be online by 7. In the past I had tried doing it on the dining room table but it was a little distracting for both kids and me so I setup the PC in the bedroom and it was better.

Henry's teeth are coming in so he had a bit of a freak-out in the afternoon and cried uncontrollably for a while in the afternoon. Took a while to get him settled and asleep, then he woke up, fell asleep on me so I left him then the damn phone rang....

I was at home because Betsy went to Adams first parent-teacher conference. He's 3 and a half yrs old!! Anyway, it was about what I expected the results to be - he doesn't want to sit down, doesn't listen to directions, etc. He's really good at the analytical/physical stuff but the social stuff he hasn't mastered yet. That's fine by me but I think Betsy sees it as a reflection on her. She was quite disappointed and shed a few tears. But remember.... he's 3 and a half!! Didn't help that the teacher is a total jerk and provided no ideas for how to help at home. Idiots. I hope we can try a different place next year. Pisses me off to no end that we pay these people good money and that can't even give you the time of day. <I'm sounding like my dad here>

Good afternoon/evening....
was able to get out for a walk with Henry because it was 64 degrees out. 64 on January 8th!!

Back to the office tomorrow but still managing to get up early and work out. Yeah me!

Weekend update...

On searching for a computer armoire....
As I said, we lost our bid by 2.50 on ebay for a pc armoire. Well, the seller called on Sat asking if we still wanted it.
Betsy said sure! but by the time he called it was late so we made plans to pick it up on Sunday.
It was in Pembroke mass - 44 miles east of us. I drove out Sun morn and got there at 10:15.
Put it in the back of the car, brought it home, B looked at it, said 'no way' and called the guy back. She was very good in stating that she was going to return it for several reasons. I took Adam bowling for an hour or so, got home around 1:30, had lunch, got in the car and drove it back out. All in all it was 186 miles that was all for naught. Bummer, and a wasted Sunday.

Other than that not too much excitement....
Family train ride from Franklin station to Forge Park (1 stop south; stayed on the train and rode back to Franklin) Quite exciting, but the conductor charged us 8 bucks(!!) to go 1 stop. Couldn't beleive it. I was pissed and he knew it.
Took Adam candlepin bowling on Sunday with his friends; he's good for about 5-6 times and then gets totally bored and is ready to go home. I didn't force him to stay and took him home. No need - it's supposed to be fun and when he's not having anymore fun then we're all done.
Sunday night before bedtime we brought Adam's train table and train sets up to his bedroom. He was so excited he couldn't slow down. Amazing what little things excite him.
Henry is starting to spit while he eats - very bad, it gets on your clothes and isn't easy to get off.
He's also getting real close to walking able to balance and stand on his own for 5-10 seconds and was taking 2-3 steps towards the couch/bed. Also can climb the stairs in seconds. Back to closing/opening gates. Uggh.....

Another day

Not much excitement today....
Still getting up early (455) to work out. First time in a couple months lifting weights so a bit sore all around. A "good" sore though! Ha - like there is ever such a thing.
shower/lunch making/off to work at 556

Got to work with no incidents...
finished up a project that's been perplexing (what a great word!) me for a while...
then, well, not much. I hate looking for work to do but I find myself doing that more-and-more lately. Not sure what kind of signal that is. Asst Dir is on vac. til end of week so it's up to me.
She'll get slammed when she gets back so it will still be up to me.
Was told I need to be more 'visible' with my colleagues during my last review. I'm thinking about trying to send fewer emails and getting up and walking over to cubicles instead. So far... not so good. Some habits are hard to break.

On the way home late (1542)
A little excitement then... disappointment. Betsy's been looking for a computer armoire to go in the dining room, found one on craigslist, found the same listing on ebay and asked me to snipe it for her (this submits a bid with 20 seconds to go on an auction). I put in 200 and the auction didn't end until 10:20. Kept refreshing the page on ebay and with 12 seconds to go we were outbid by 2.50. Bummer. I tried to encourage by saying that we found this one so I'm sure we'll find another. Have to admit though this one would have worked nicely. After that I hit the rack.

What a start !!

2008 started with quite a scare...
I decided to change my routine a bit and got up around 4:55 to work out for 20 minutes and then shower/get ready/fix lunch and breakfast and get out the door by or before 6.
(we'll see how long that lasts but I need to get back into exercising. I have about 15 or so lbs to shed before summer is here)

Actually it was the 2nd day of the year when I headed to work a little before 6.
I was heading to work on a rural road, came around the corner going about 30 and bam! about 50 feet in front of me was a deer.
It looked about 10 feet tall with my headlights on it in the dark.
I hadn't hit a deer my entire life and I didn't want to start now.
I stomped on the brakes, slid left then slid to the right and went 2/3 off the road into a snowbank. <lucky I didn't *really* slide since it was fairly icy out>
I put it in reverse and hit the gas. My car is a Camry and unfortunately it is a front wheel drive.
Now I was in trouble. The wheels just spin in the snow and ice.
What to do???
I put on my hazards and hoped I wouldn't be creamed from behind from oncoming traffic.
Opened my door (and left it open to add a bit more light for oncomers) took a look around and realized I needed to dig some snow out.
Popped open the trunk (left it open so people would see me) looked around for something to dig with.
Thankfully found a long-handled ice scraper and started using it to dig away about 28 inches of snow and ice in 28 degree weather while wearing dress pants and dress shoes. Fun!
My first try was unsuccessful.
Got out, tried again and did everything but get down on my knees and dig.
This time it worked! Whew! About a 15-20 minute delay with no damage or injuries so I felt lucky.

Off to work...
everyone wishing happy new year. some folks out (since the week started on a wednesday) until next week. picked up right where we left off. Not much to do as of now. Asst Dir. is on vacation so trying to 'find' work, etc. predicting a cubicle switch-a-roo soon so I packed up some personal stuff. we'll see; director is out sick.

On way home around 3
first thing I did was put a shovel in the trunk!
played with kids/helped clean up/dinner/bath and bed around 7
fell asleep on couch around 9ish watching sugar bowl (w.va. vs. ok. - turned out to be a blowout) woke up at 930 and off to bed
Betsy went to sleep about 845; she was pretty tired due to Henry waking up and needing some bottle
